Benefits of a recovery chair post-surgery

There are many benefits to using a recovery chair after surgery.

Benefits

Prevent blood clots. Blood clots can be prevented post surgery by keeping the patients legs moving. A recovery chair can help to do this by making it easier for the patient to get up and move around.

Reduce pain and swelling. The reclining position of a recovery chair can help to reduce pain and swelling after surgery. This is because the care chair helps to keep your legs elevated, which helps to improve circulation.

Improve breathing. The reclining position of a recovery chair can also help to improve breathing, reducing pressure on the lungs.

Reduce stress and anxiety. Being able to sit up and move around can help to reduce stress and anxiety of a patient post-surgery.

Increased mobility. A recovery chair can enable a patient to be more mobile after surgery. This is because it makes it easier for them to get up and move around; vital for a quicker recovery.

Fast track patient independence. A recovery chair can help the patient to be more independent after surgery.  Sitting or lying in a bed can have an impact on a patient's mental health and make recovery a slower process.

Recovery chair considerations

Make sure the chair is comfortable and supportive. The patient will (hopefully) be spending significant time in the chair when having physio and when introducing early mobilisation, so it is important that it is comfortable for them. Look for a chair with a cushioned seat and back, and make sure the armrests are at a comfortable height.

Make sure the chair is adjustable. You will need to be able to adjust the chair to different positions for the patient, so it is important that the chair is adjustable – and preferable has tilt in space – so less room is taken up by the chair.

Make sure the chair is safe. The chair should be stable and have a sturdy frame. If the patient is has a neurological condition or illness, laterals and / or wings are vital.
